I used to hide behind a mask when I would talk to potential clients. It wasn't intentional and I never considered it hiding, but that's what it was. I thought, like most people think, that in order to get the sale, I needed to be a certain person. And even if that person wasn't exactly the real me, it was close enough, and the important thing was that I was booking the client.
Except that it didn’t always work.
Not only was I not booking as many clients as I wanted, I also wasn’t enjoying sales calls very much. I was working too hard and frustrated that I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted to.
And then I had a, well, transformational experience. And I realized that I wasn’t doing anybody any favors by putting on the mask. Instead of feeling like I needed to make each sale, I decided to just have fun instead and see what happened. I’m so glad I did.
Once I let go of the need to make the sale and focused on having fun, I started having much friendlier and more interesting conversations with potential clients (even price shoppers!). Instead of pretending to be something I wasn’t, I was just being me. So it didn’t feel like work - it was effortless. The icing on the cake? I booked more clients than ever before.
I saw the most noticeable difference in sales, but the results extended way beyond that. The way I connected with other wedding vendors shifted, too. I started connecting with the right people, people who liked me for me, instead of just those I thought I needed to connect with. I was making better connections with people who were referring me a lot more often. Again, this led to having more fun and, ultimately, more money in the bank.
Don’t get me wrong, I still mess it up. I’ll forget the experience and have a week where I’m putting on the mask, worried about making the sale. But it never lasts. Eventually, I get sick of that and remember how expensive it is to not have fun. And then the magic comes back.
Does work feel like work right now? Brides want to work with people who are having fun - vendors who are at their best and love what they do. If you’ve been putting on the mask, it’s time to let go. It’s just too expensive to be anybody other than yourself.
What’s one way you can be more vulnerable and authentic this week in your business?
Give it a shot and let us know what happens. Have fun.
